SESSIONAL INSTRUCTOR POSTINGS

We also hire faculty into term appointments for a specified period of time for courses taught in the Department of Economics, Philosophy & Political Science. Sessional lecturers teach and/or perform related duties, including course coordination or lab supervision, for a period of less than 12 months.

CURRENT POSTINGS

The Department of Economics, Philosophy and Political Science of the Irving K. Barber Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, Okanagan campus, requires an instructor to teach the following course during the 2024 Summer Session Term 2.

Term 2, July 2 – August 31, 2024

ECON 101:  Principles of Microeconomics

Elements of theory and Canadian policy and institutions concerning the economics of markets and market behaviour, prices and costs, exchange and trade, competition and monopoly, distribution of income.

Applicants with a PhD in the relevant discipline and relevant research and post-secondary teaching experience are required. Interested applicants should submit:

  • Curriculum Vitae (including but not limited to previous teaching experience),
  • recent teaching evaluations (if available), and
  • list of three references.

Teaching Assistants

The Department of Economics, Philosophy & Political Science will be hiring a combination of Graduate Teaching Assistants (GTAs) and possibly Undergraduate Teaching Assistants (UTAs) for undergraduate courses for the Winter terms. UTAs will only be hired if graduate students do not take the option of these positions or if more funding becomes available.

To apply for a UTA position, the student must be enrolled in a full-time bachelor degree program at UBC Okanagan [Note: A full-time student is defined as minimum of 24 credits (2 terms) for the Winter Session, 9 credits for the Summer Session]. All applicants including international students must be living and permitted to work in Canada until to be offered a position and able to do so until at least April 30, 2025.

The successful Teaching Assistant may be involved in the following:

  • instruction in tutorials (GTA)
  • marking assignments, quizzes and exams
  • discussion periods
  • invigilation duties
  • academic assistance to students in office hours

The hours will not exceed an average of 12 hours per week. Wages as stated in the current BCGEU Collective Agreement are as follows (*these rates are as of September 2023. Rates will be updated according to any current changes to the BCGEU Collective Agreement):

  • Graduate TA1 (PhD program): $36.82 per hour ($14,137.52 annual rate Sept. – Apr.)
  • Graduate TA2 (Master’s program): $35.48 per hour ($13,623.04 annual rate Sept. – Apr.)
  • Undergraduate TA (bachelors program): $19.54 per hour ($7,503.68 annual rate Sept. – Apr.)
